We are delighted to have supplied several of our Solatube products to some of the families featured in the BBC One series DIY SOS: The Big Build. Along with several other generous trades, our Daylighting Systems were installed to help make life-changing transformations to the homes of the families featured.
Our installation operatives worked alongside Nick Knowles and his team – including the flamboyant Mr Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen – to install the tubular daylighting systems into hallways, bathrooms and other rooms in the families’ homes, to provide beautiful, well-lit rooms, which played a part in helping the families to meet their needs.
In one project, the team helped Frank and Christine Burrows in Wigan, Greater Manchester. In 2012, their 35-year-old son Mark became paralysed as the result of an unprovoked attack that left him with severe brain damage. He now needs constant care, but in order to bring Mark home from his care home 15 miles away, the family home needed modification. A self-contained apartment was created alongside the family's two-bedroom bungalow in order to provide Mark with the space, independence and security he needed to return home. Our daylighting systems helped to illuminate the hallway and bathroom in this project.
In another episode, we helped in the adaption a family's home where the the garage was extended to create a purpose built independent space with a wet-room, bedroom and dedicated medical support area for their daughter.
The ‘big reveals’ did cause a few moist eyes on each occasion, but we are delighted to have been involved in these very special and worthwhile projects and bring some light into the lives of these very special people. DIY SOS ensures all works carried out are overseen by building control, so it was important that our products were fully compliant and we were happy to oblige with our BBA Certified systems.
