To improve the sustainability of the M&S Estate

The store was awarded BREEAM Excellent Certification

M&S is probably the best known name on the UK high street and has stores in over 50 territories across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Its Property Group is responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of its buildings which includes stores, offices and distribution sites. Integral to its work is Plan A – an initiative to improve the sustainability of the M&S Estate.

The aims set out in Plan A are achieved in a variety of ways and include the testing of new techniques, technologies and products in its Sustainable Learning Stores which include one of its premier sites at Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, East London.

Solatube Daylighting Systems were installed to back offices and staff training rooms at this store to bring daylight to areas that would otherwise have no natural light.

The main contractor on this site was Simpson York and project manager Nigel Harthill was impressed by the performance of the systems, commenting that the overall effect was very good. The store was awarded BREEAM Excellent Certification.
