What's in a name?

Commercially, devices such as Solatube® Daylighting Systems are categorized officially as 'Tubular Daylighting Devices' (TDDs), although terms such as sun tube, lightpipe, sun tunnel, sun pipe, solar tube, sola pipe and sola lights have been used to describe Solatube® Daylighting Systems. Solatube Daylighting Systems - the name to remember

 

Solatube® has two product ranges; the Brighten Up® Series and the Solamaster® Series. The Brighten Up® Series has been designed for use in the home and consists of two models; the Solatube® 160 DS and the Solatube® 290 DS. The Solamaster® range is designed primarily for commercial applications such as retail, industrial, healthcare, schools, etc.

Terms that are exclusive trademarks belonging to Solatube® that you will see throughout this website include: Solatube®, Brighten Up®, SolaMaster®, LightTracker™, OptiView®, Vusion™, Innovation in Daylighting™, Raybender® 3000, Spectralight® Infinity, Solatube® Daylight Dimmer.

Glossary of terms

  • Dome - daylight-collecting device that seals the system from the elements
  • Daylight collecting - active vs passive - active daylight collection uses lenses and reflectors to redirect light into the system, passive systems have no light enhancing devices
  • Daylighting - the controlled admission of natural light into a space to reduce or eliminate electric lighting
  • Diffuser - a light-spreading device that distributes light evenly and efficiently
  • Fresnel lens - a light enhancing lens system, originally used to great effect in lighthouses
  • High angle light - typically midday and summer light
    Low angle light - typically early morning, late afternoon and winter light
  • Lumen - a unit of measurement of the amount of brightness that comes from a light source, for example, a wax candle generates 13 lumens; a 100 watt bulb generates 1,200 lumens
  • Lux - a unit of measurement of the intensity of light, it is equal to the illumination of a surface one meter away from a single candle
  • Roof flashing - a weatherproof component that integrates into the roof
  • Reflectivity value - the amount of light that continues on its journey after striking a surface
  • Solar gain/loss - heat transfer to or from a system
