Unusual but brilliant ...
an underground swimming pool
The owners of a north London home had a vision to create an underground swimming pool beneath their existing home. Their home had no basement or cellar, so, after consultation with their architect, they began the task of excavating under house. This mammoth task threw up many challenges – not least of which was the owner's desire to bring daylight into the new subterranean pool area.
With all these obstacles in mind, the owner attended the Grand Designs exhibition, chanced onto the Solatube® stand and described to us her vision. We appreciated the challenges involved and spoke to the relevant companies who were excavating and lining the underground area, and came up with a solution that would allow the Solatube® Daylighting Systems to be used without compromising the sealed section of the underground wall or the performance of the Solatubes.
The owners also had very artistic ideas with regard to the diffusion of the natural light that the Solatube® Daylighting Systems would bring. They had in mind a 'louvred effect' in the walls of the pool area from which the daylight would emanate. They commissioned a company to create these louvres that would be placed in front of the Solatube® diffusers.
The result is quite stunning with all the benefits that the daylight brings along with the artistic merits of the round, wooden louvres. The whole area benefits from daylight brought into the subterranean swimming pool via a wall-mounted diffuser, behind which a 90 degree angle adaptor takes the tube vertically up through the ground, through an enclosed area containing the heat pumps and ventilation for the swimming pool, and finally to the domes which peek out at the side of the house to collect the daylight .
This is an innovative and stunning application for Solatube® Daylighting Systems and we were delighted to help the homeowners achieve their vision.

Owing to the ceiling design and the larger area of this vaulted cellar, the owner opted for the 530mm diameter Solatube® 330DS with a square diffuser, more usually specified for commercial use but used to great effect here. |
Even though darkness is falling outside, the electric light fitted in the Solatube® Daylighting System ensures that it continues to take centre place in this stunning galleried lobby. |
