Architect Nicholas Halton bought a riverside plot with a bungalow to meet his living and working requirements.
He planned to turn the bungalow into light and airy two-storey accommodation, that would incorporate both a living area for his family and space for his practice.
Through his work in residential and commercial properties, Nic was both familiar with tubular skylights and aware that there are significant differences in the performance of various suppliers’ solutions. This knowledge made him determined to specify Solatube® Daylighting Systems.
Although the living dayroom has large windows and casement doors, its aspect means that the space is often very dark. The installation of a Solatube® Daylighting System has resulted in sparkling daylight in the room even when the sun is very low and would not enter through the
windows.

In the long narrow kitchen, there was a requirement for extension tubes to bring light from the tiled, pitch roof. However, thanks to the 99.7% reflective tube material – Spectralight® Infinity – light is transferred extremely effectively and there is no need for electric lighting in the room even on cloudy days.
The first floor landing (seen left in the picture below) also benefits from daylight from a Solatube® Daylighting System. Even though there are no windows, there is still ample light to illuminate the landing area, stairwell and hall below.

Like most, this walk-in closet is windowless, but now natural light floods in from the Solatube® Daylighting System. Almost all UV is filtered out as the daylight passes through the Solatube® dome and diffuser, so there is no risk of clothes fading, and the owners see their clothes' true colours under the natural light. |
This dining room used to have harsh shafts of sunlight coming into the room from the windows and the owners were concerned about the effect this would have on their expensive furniture and carpets. Now the harsh sunlight is filtered by shutters, but the room is still beautifully lit thanks to two Solatube® Daylighting Systems. |
This lounge is the result of an extension to the original house, and , owing to planning restrictions, the number of windows was limited. To ensure their lounge was always bright and cheerful, the owners installed two Solatube® Daylighting Systems and were delighted with the result! |

This artist was already familiar with Solatube® Daylighting Systems and had created a gallery in the large hallway of his home safe in the knowledge that he could illuminate the area with natural light. Three Solatube® Daylighting Systems light the area beautifully and with no risk of UV damage to his artwork. He chose the distinctive OptiView® diffuser for a stunning architectural effect that blended well with the style of the hallway. |
