When Craig and Charlotte decided to move house they wanted somewhere that was a straightforward commute to work, but also offered a rural feel. When they viewed a three storey townhouse in an ideal location, it was almost perfect – but there was a downside. The bathroom and the en suite had no windows and, with a north facing garden flanked by large trees, there was little chance of introducing much natural light by putting in traditional windows. Indeed this would have been a very costly solution as a lot of structural work would have been required.
Craig remembered seeing a potential solution on the television – tubular daylighting devices. After doing some research, Craig and Charlotte decided that Solatube® Daylighting Systems would be ideal.
The first room they tackled was the bathroom; it was completely dark and required the use of electric lighting during the day. One Solatube® 160 DS Daylighting System was installed which transformed the bathroom into a bright, cheerful and welcoming room.
The Solatube® installer had brought along a light meter and lux readings were taken before and after the installation. Prior to the Solatube® installation and without electric lights on the lux reading was a mere 11.49. With the lights on, the reading was 102.60 lux. After the installation of just one Solatube® Daylighting System, the reading was a huge 1649.00 lux!

Solatube® bathes this bathroom in beautiful natural light. An electric light kit is fitted for night time use; it is fully integrated into the Solatube® Daylighting System to provide one neat ceiling fixture. |
This bathroom is fitted with a Solatube® Daylighting System and optional Solatube® bathroom ventilation kit. When true colour rendition is vital, only natural light will do! The ventilation kit keeps moist damp air from steaming up the room. |
