The history of Solatube® Daylighting Systems

Solatube - the original tubular skylight

The roots of Solatube® International Inc, originator of the Tubular Daylighting Device, go back to the 1980s and the Solatube's inventor Steve Sutton. At a time when poorly designed – and often leak-prone – traditional skylights had become the scorn of homeowners, the inventor had a revolutionary idea: a compact, leak-proof and effective alternative.

His concept incorporated a light-capturing system on the rooftop that redirected light down through a highly reflective cylinder to a light diffuser at ceiling level. The system would be simple to install without structural modifications and provide exceptional lighting. In 1986, a patent was sought and four years later the first Solatube® was sold.

Solatube International headquarters in Carlsbad, California, USA

In 1992, Solatube® Inc was established in California, USA and over the next few years, the Solatube product range was increased. By 1998, opportunities were escalating around the globe. The company was restructured and Solatube International Inc was established to manage worldwide operations.

More than 20 years have passed since its first patent was sought, and Solatube® has demonstrated an unrivalled commitment to state-of-the-art technology and design. The future looks even brighter for Solatube with several new products currently in development. By continuing to improve upon the oldest – and finest – light source of all, Solatube opens up a whole new world of natural lighting solutions.
